Sometimes the smallest change to a website can have a profound impact on it's effectiveness. Below are five often overlooked things you can do to improve your website.
1. Focus each page on one subject If your page contains info about 4 different subjects you're confusing both visitors and search engines. Instead, create relevant content based on one narrowly focused topic per page. This helps visitors find what they're looking for quickly, increasing the odds of a sale or lead.
2. Customer centered text (we vs. you) Use plain spoken english that won't confuse visitors. Make sure your text focuses on your customer's needs instead of your own. Words like "we", "us" and "our" can drive customers away. Instead, make the site about them, not you, by using words like "you" and "yours".
3. Create compelling call to actions Most websites have poor call to actions or overlook it entirely. Tell your visitor exactly what you want them to do. It can be as simple as "buy now", "learn more" or "call now". Don't settle for something boring like "click here". Of course it's better than nothing, but consider using a more creative and compelling call to action.
4. Simplify your forms Whether it's a contact form or a newsletter sign up, make your forms short and simple. Only ask for the essentials. You're better off asking for just their name and phone or email. This greatly increases form completion rates.
5. Streamline your shopping cart This is generally where you lose the most visitors, but it can easily be avoided by requesting only the info required, using as few pages as possible. The faster your visitors move through your checkout, the more revenue you'll receive. Don't require visitors to fill in the same information twice (ie: billing and mailing address). Using a progress bar at the top of the cart has been proven to prevent cart abandonment. Visitors don't know how long checkout will take unless you tell them.
Remember, you're not their only option There are millions of websites offering all types of information, products or services designed to achieve certain goals. Even the most trafficked sites can be improved by implementing the above ideas.
